What sits in between?
In between you and me?
In between this music and we?
To share and receive?
To somehow believe?
In the ancient world, a man named Peter, a follower of Jesus, preached to a group of people in the house of Cornelius. His audience tried their best to follow along, but by all accounts, his sermon was long winded. His words big and bold, would inevitably lead to a grand conclusion, but before they did, some thing abruptly stopped him.
It rendered his words complete.
It opened upon them, like a torrential rain.
Disruptively, it fell in between.
No longer one, or two, but now there were three.
Some thing happened.
During the Jewish festival of Pentecost, Luke another follower of Christ called the thing, the Spirit.
He heard it… "A violent wind, shaking the palms of the trees, turning them into tambourines.”
He saw it… “Like light from a flame, separated and settling on the heads of each one gathered in the room.”

On a road to a place called Emmaus, two who were said to be “slow to believe” found themselves traveling with a person they did not know, a presence they couldn’t have described, a complete stranger.
“Stay with us?” they asked him.
Then at dinner, during the breaking of bread, the Christ was revealed.
“Did not our hearts burn within us?”
Not one, not two. but there were three.
Who is it that walks in between and causes hearts to burn?
What falls in tongues like fire and renders words complete?
What counts our tears and gives us the longing for the world without them?
Oh, Mystery of Mysteries.
Oh, Balm of Gilead.
Comforter
Counselor
Though we,
slow to believe.
This thing,
The Spirit
The Christ
holds us, still.
